Wireless Security: Don't Get Caught Out

Customers of US retailer TJX, owner of TK Maxx, were the victims of the largest ever frauds when 45.7 million payment cards details were obtained by drive-by hackers accessing the company's poorly secured Wi-Fi network. Could you be next?

In response to threats against wireless security the Payment Card Industry is introducing new guidelines which come into full effect in 2010. PCI is planning to raise card payment processing fees for non-compliant companies, while other penalties include fines of up to £250,000 for each instance of non-compliance, and a total bar on processing credit and debit card payments.

The 2010 guidelines require businesses to perform onsite audits and scans to test the vulnerability of wireless networks and ensure customers' payment details are kept secure. For a retailer with around 100 stores employing an auditor to prove PCI compliance could cost between £60K and £100K a year.

Alternatively a Wireless Intrusion Prevention System can conduct network security audits, automatically compile reports and continually scan your network 24/7. WIPS keeps you PCI compliant, your network secure and your customers' details safe.
