Sainsbury Centre Shops at Jade
The University of East Anglia, Norwich, is one of the Sunday Times Top 20 Universities with over 14,000 students and 2,500 staff located in a 320 acre parkland setting.
The University is home to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts which houses the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection, donated to the University by the couple in 1973. The Sainsbury Centre also hosts a world class programme of exhibitions and events, and is home to the University's School of World Art Studies and Museology.
The Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts (SCVA) underwent an extensive two year refurbishment and redevelopment programme which was completed in 2007. The building is a purpose built museum originally designed, and subsequently refurbished, by leading architects, Foster and Partners.
The Project
Jade Communications was commissioned to provide a complete structured cabling infrastructure for the centre - a mix of ADC Krone TrueNET Category 5E copper infrastructure and fibre optic products for efficient data transfer across the internal network. Voice cabling was also installed and linked to the university's central telephony system.
Foster and Partners' designs are both modern and complex in terms of layout and use of materials. The challenge for Jade was to work within these design constraints - finding innovative ways to house all cables without detracting from the aesthetic look and feel of the centre.
Efficient project management and careful planning by Jade's 8-strong team allowed for a phased approach to the installation, working around the construction teams and within the agreed timescales for completion.
Jade in conjunction with UEA ISD, UEA Estates and the main contractor were successful in keeping a section of the building open and connected to the campus network whilst the construction project was ongoing.
The Project
The Sainsbury Centre attracts over 50,000 visits a year to exhibitions and events, 12,500 of which are made by young people in school groups. The galleries, café, restaurant and School of World Art are used by over 150,000 people a year.
A new phase of development is set to begin in 2009 with the advent of a public access handheld system and an audio visual information display to further engage visitors to the museum and bring the exhibits to life.
